In the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan, which today houses over 76,000 Syrians eight years after its establishment in 2012, a team of refugees has built a sanitising robot out of legos, to help the local community prevent a coronavirus outbreak.

Marwan, a trainer in the camp’s Innovation Lab, says he wants people to understand that refugees have the talent to contribute, and that they’re active agents in the fight against coronavirus. The simple prototype automatically dispenses sanitiser when the sensor detects a hand so people don’t have to touch the bottle.

Previously, the Zaatari Innovation Lab also saw its team of young engineers compete in the Jordanian National Robotics Competition. They were subsequently chosen for the Arab Robots Championship, which was to be held in Egypt in March 2020, but was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
